There are 5 steps to follow when starting a blog:
1. Decide what you will be blogging about.
This is one of the first steps you need to spend time on before just going head-on into investing your own money into a blog. Your first and one of the most important steps is to decide what you want to blog about.
Ask yourself, Why am I starting this? take my advice don’t just go into blogging because you can make money; yes, you can make a full income with blogging, but this should not be your one and only reason. So if you are stuck on what to blog about, make some notes about things you love— something you can spend hours talking about! This is what you should be blogging about.
If you are still stuck and not sure where to start, read our blog post here: What is a niche and how to choose one?
Blogging can be about cooking, mom life, travel, beauty—you name it—but find the one thing you have the most passion for.
2. Pick a host.
You need to pick a host to get your website “live” and viewable to the public. Basically, it provides all the “background” information.
There are so many hosts on the market, and I would recommend these two options:
- If you are based in South Africa, I recommend using Xneelo. (I currently use Xneelo to host this stunning blog right here.)
I am absolutely blown away by Xneelo’s customer service. They were recommended by my then boyfriend now fiancé who has worked in the IT industry for many years. He has vast experience using Xneelo with customers and therefore it came highly recommended.
And I can 100% back up this recommendation. Since I started using Xneelo they have always assisted with any queries regarding my website, and I only use Xneelo when building websites for my clients.
[UPDATE: Xneelo can be used all over the world, however their billing would be done annually via visa card]
- If you are based elsewhere in the world or even in South Africa I recommend using Bluehost.
There are a few reasons I recommend Bluehost. First, they are SO cheap. Second, their customer service is amazing.
When just starting you really only need the $2.95 a month option but the $5.95 gives you much more if you want to spend the two dollars more. Either of them will work great!
3. Choose your blogging platform.
I only use and recommend WordPress!
WordPress has two different options that you can choose from. They have a hosted option (www.wordpress.com) and a self-hosted option (www.wordpress.org). I only teach how to start a self-hosted WordPress blog. It is by far the most popular among beginner AND long-term bloggers. (Also, do not let the .org scare you at the end of the self-hosted WordPress website…your website name DOES NOT have to have .org in it! It can be a .com website. )
4. Design your website.
My absolute favourite part of starting a blog is definitely choosing how my little online home will look. I recommend using a WordPress theme that is already available on WordPress itself. Do not go and spend more money on blog themes when you just start out. First, get that home up and running, you can upgrade in the future!
5. Get blogging!
Your first step after creating your blog is to get that first blog post out there as soon as you possibly can and keep working on your blog even if it’s 1 hour a day.
Starting a blog is easy, sticking it out and working on it every single day is the difficult part.
